At 39, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is still going strong, and ignoring — for now — questions over his club and national team future.
Neuer’s contract is up at the end of the year and while he has
been retired from Germany duty for a while, his strong performances for Bayern this year mean questions keep coming up over whether he would make a sensational, last-minute return in time for the 2026 Men’s World Cup.
“My opinion is clear: Despite his age, I think he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Bayern executive board member for sport Max Eberl said in recent comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “That was just my opinion as Max Eberl. In the end, Manu will decide whether he goes to the World Cup or not. And when it comes to extending his contract, our first point of contact will also be Manu.”
If anyone has earned the right to dictate his own future, it is Neuer. Although where the national team is concerned, Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann probably has a say as well.
