Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa spoke ahead of the game against Villarreal to address an injury shortage which could force some players out of position, by saying, “what I can say is that the players are
willing to help, they put the team above the individual. It’s not that these cases have been a problem, they both played a great game. They performed sensationally. That’s what I want to see, players who are committed and available to the team. They are versatile and have tremendous ability. They are talented, which allows them to play wherever they want.”
Arbeloa on Villarreal
“They are a great rival, they will demand a lot from us. We are very aware of what we need to do tomorrow to take all three points.”
Arbeloa on the importance of the match
“It’s very important because of what it means, because of the opponent. It’s one of the most difficult away games in the league, we have to be at our best if we want to win. That’s what we’re focused on.”
Arbeloa on him pausing in front of the Champions League trophies
“I’m very calm about the criticism, focused on what I have to do. I felt the history of Madrid, the other day Ancelotti stopped too. If he stops, how can I not?”
Arbeloa on performances improving
“I’m talking about the ten days I’ve been here, that’s what I have to talk about. I believe and hope that Monaco will be a turning point. We have a lot of work to do, but from day one I’ve seen a group that’s willing to work.”
Arbeloa on Vinícius and his contract renewal
“It’s not up to me, it’s up to the club and the player. Of course I want him to continue making history here.”
Arbeloa on whether signings are needed
“I have an extraordinary squad. If we need anything, we have a great youth academy, as has always been the case in the history of Madrid.”
Arbeloa on praise from Mourinho
“You all know what Mou means to me. If a coach like that speaks, especially him, I listen and analyse.”
Arbeloa on Jude Bellingham
“It’s up to me to talk about what I’ve experienced. The matches with me, even in training sessions, have shown me his ability, his technique, his leadership, his character. The effort he put in was tremendous, he has a winning mentality, he has everything a Madrid player needs. I’m delighted with him.”
Arbeloa on Monaco being a turning point
“Hopefully it’s the turning point we need. Kylian said it, it was our moment to step up and show what we want to do. It’s important and the players did it, with effort and humility. Hopefully it will continue like this.”
Arbeloa on the dressing room
“I try to help the players, I can’t talk about the past, about whether they are happier or less happy than before. They are willing to work, they have welcomed me with open arms.”
Arbeloa on ending doubts with a win
“I’m not really worried about that, to be honest. Just the match, playing a great game and winning. That the players perform well. The rest doesn’t concern me.”
Arbeloa on Brahim Díaz
“I’m very happy to have him with us. He’s shown his ability at Real Madrid and in the Africa Cup of Nations. He’s very unpredictable, plays between the lines and can perform in many positions. He has a great mentality and is willing to work hard. We’re going to need him.”
Arbeloa on Rodrygo
“Rodrygo will be in the squad.”
Arbeloa on his approach
“Winning is the most important thing here, beyond systems. I want to see the character and mentality from the other day. It represents Madrid very well, that feeling of everyone pulling together. Those values are ours, we must never abandon them.”
