The German national football team has had it tough with its goalkeeper. Die Mannschaft saw the retirement of Manuel Neuer and the injury of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, their two main goalkeepers, which prompted Oliver Baumann to stand in as the experienced deputy. Rumors started swirling that Neuer might make a sensational comeback to the national team, but he has refuted those claims.
“First of all, I wasn’t asked [to come back],” Neuer said (SID as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia). “It was a conscious
decision of mine to no longer be part of the national team and to retire from international football. So that’s not even an option for me.”
The 39-year-old also believes that what he has achieved during his stint with Germany was enough for him: “I had a very successful and enjoyable time, and I’m not thinking at all about whether or how Manuel Neuer [sic] might return to the national team. The EUROs at home was a nice ending. I think I’ve gained a lot from German football and maybe also given a little something to German football.”
