Taking a series from the Yankees doesn’t save the season. But, damn, it feels good.
After Payton Tolle dominated on the mound last night, the Sox can keep the good vibes going this afternoon behind Jake Bennett, who is coming off the best outing of his young career, having struck out nine Rockies through six scoreless on the recent roadtrip.
The Sox will be up against Gerritt Cole, and they don’t have his daddy, Rafael Devers, around to send him to his room anymore. They also won’t have Marcelo Mayer,
who was recently placed on the IL with a “bone stress reaction” on his left wrist, an ailment he’s apparently been battling for the last two months, during which he’s been unproductive at the plate and mediocre in the field.
I’m loathe to ever criticize a team’s medical staff; I am wholly unqualified to do so and I imagine that managing injuries is one of the hardest things a team has to do. Having said that, it’s hard not to be frustrated by the way all of these seemingly minor issues are lingering and turning into bigger things. In light of the fact that Marcelo has been far from lighting the league on fire, it seems like this could potentially have been dealt with earlier.
Oh well! Let’s win a damn ballgame.
