As the search for Germany’s next head coach continues following Julian Nagelsmann’s departure, one of England’s greatest footballers believes the answer is obvious: Jürgen Klopp.
England legend Alan Shearer threw his full support behind the idea of Klopp taking over the German national team, arguing that the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager has everything needed to restore one of international football’s traditional powers.
“It would be brilliant for Germany if Klopp takes the national
team role. I think with his energy, with his charisma, with all of his know-how, I think it would be a brilliant appointment for Germany. Obviously, he’s been to all the games in terms of being a pundit now on the touchline as well and he’s been critical of them. I totally understand that and I think his criticism has been fair. But he would be a brilliant appointment for Germany,” Shearer told Betfair.
Coming from Shearer, the praise is notable. The Premier League’s all-time leading scorer watched Klopp transform Liverpool into both Premier League and Champions League winners, earning a reputation as one of the game’s elite managers. In Shearer’s view, those same qualities could be exactly what Germany needs after another disappointing major tournament.
Klopp certainly checks plenty of boxes. His ability to build a strong team culture, develop young players, and get the most out of talented squads has been evident throughout his managerial career. Germany still boasts an impressive pool of players, including Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and several other established internationals. What the team has lacked is consistency, identity, and confidence.
Those shortcomings were on full display during Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit, and Klopp himself did not shy away from criticizing the team’s performances while working as a television pundit during the tournament. Rather than hurting his candidacy, Shearer believes those honest assessments demonstrate that Klopp already understands the problems that must be fixed.
Of course, appointing Klopp would be far easier said than done. Whether he is interested in returning to full-time coaching so soon remains the biggest question. However, if the DFB can convince him to take the job, it would immediately become one of the most significant managerial appointments in international football.
For Shearer, there is little doubt. If Germany wants the best possible candidate to lead its rebuild, Klopp should be at the top of the list.
