It is safe to say that Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller is a happy man in his new home of Vancouver. The world champions has already won two trophies with the Vancouver Whitecaps, and is currently in Major
League Soccer’s Western Conference final at the time of writing.
That said, he is still following his old club as well. In an interview with RTL, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, he said: “The team is very well-equipped, and the coaching staff with Vincent Kompany is doing an outstanding job. It’s a joy to watch them play. I haven’t watched all the games, but I’ve gotten a good impression. It’s been fantastic so far, and I hope things will continue this way.”
However, like he said, Müller has not been avidly following every single Bayern game, mostly due to the time difference between Munich and Vancouver. “Sometimes it’s not easy [to watch the games],” Müller added. “Champions League matches are somewhat manageable because 9PM in Europe means 12PM here. We usually have training around 10:30 or 11 AM, which isn’t ideal. Bundesliga matches at 3:30 PM in Germany are very difficult.”
Indeed, 3:30PM kickoffs in Germany would mean 6:30AM kickoffs on the West Coast. This writer had trouble waking up on weekends for 9:30 kickoffs on the East Coast during his college days, so he can only imagine what getting up three hours earlier (when you’re supposed to sleep in, no less) would be. That said, Müller still has it better than the author in Korea, where midweek games normally kickoff between 4 and 5AM.
Anyway, “I’m in contact with my old teammates, I watch a lot of highlights, and stay up-to-date,” added Müller. Despite the ungodly kickoff times, it seems like the Raumdeuter is still trying to stay in touch with his boyhood club as much as possible.
