Tom Bischof experienced a unique first season at Bayern Munich. Despite being a midfielder by trade, the 21-year-old earned most of his playing time at left-back in Vincent Kompany’s side. While Bischof did a stellar job on the left of Bayern’s defence, it was his cameos in midfield that really impressed.
After Leon Goretzka’s departure and the signing of German left-back Nathaniel Brown, Bischof looks set to return to his natural position in the heart of the pitch.
Bayern sporting director Christoph
Freund is a firm believer in Bischof’s abilities and believes the former TSG Hoffenheim man is ready to take on an expanded role.
“His role will become even more important,” said Freund in an interview with Bild (via @iMiaSanMia). “We have big hopes and complete confidence in him. He is a truly outstanding player and will take on even more responsibility while earning more playing time. I’m convinced he’s ready for that”
Goretzka’s departure will leave plenty of minutes for Bischof — who spent last season behind the 31-year-old in the midfield pecking order. He may even look to relegate Aleksandar Pavlović to the bench following a string of shaky performances at the World Cup.
Regardless, one thing is certain: Bayern fans will be seeing a lot more of one of the club’s brightest talents this season.
