Bayern Munich could hardly have asked for a better start to their Champions League campaign. After Matchday 1, the Bavarians sit second in the league phase table following their 5-0 dismantling of FK Bodø/Glimt.
Only Paris Saint-Germain stands above Bayern Munich after the opening round. The reigning European champions made their own statement with a 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava, giving them the edge over Bayern Munich on goal difference.
PSG has shown that it will once again be a major force
in the competition, and Bayern Munich will need to keep producing dominant results if they want to remain among the league phase’s elite.
FC Barcelona is right behind Bayern Munich in third place after opening with a 5-1 win over Feyenoord. Like PSG and Bayern Munich, Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona sent an early message that their attack is capable of overwhelming opponents. The race for the top eight, and potentially even the top spot, is already shaping up to be highly competitive.
Manchester United produced one of Matchday 1’s more eye-catching results, hammering Sabah 4-0 in its Champions League return. The scoreline was especially notable because it showed just how quickly goal difference could become important in this new format.
For now, though, Bayern Munich are exactly where they want to be: unbeaten, on three points, with a +5 goal difference and sitting second in Europe. The challenge now is maintaining that position.
