When NFL players leave the team that originally drafted them, they may not be truly happy behind closed doors or they are in search of a new challenge in their careers. For now-former Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans, it was the latter. But regardless of the reason, it didn’t rub Bucs fans the right way.
A recent SB Nation Reacts poll confirmed what many already sensed around Tampa Bay: fans are still struggling with the departure of Mike Evans. According to the survey, 84% of respondents said
they were unhappy that the longtime star wide receiver moved on from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, marking one of the most lopsided fan responses of the offseason.
Evans’ exit closes the book on one of the most productive and beloved careers in franchise history. The veteran receiver spent a decade in Tampa Bay, recording more than 11,000 receiving yards and 90+ touchdowns, while becoming the only player in NFL history to begin his career with ten consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. For many fans, Evans wasn’t just a top weapon — he was the identity of the organization for years.
Now beginning the next chapter of his career with the San Francisco 49ers, Bucs fans will just have to get used to seeing him in red and gold rather than red and pewter.
