Number 14 ranked TCU women’s basketball lost a heartbreaker on the road to number 18 ranked Texas Tech this past Sunday by a final score of 62-60. The Frogs battled through a tough shooting night to very nearly knock off a ranked opponent in a hostile environment in Lubbock. TCU moved to 20-3 on the season and 8-2 in Big 12 play with the loss, but the Horned Frogs remain in a tie for first place in the conference with Baylor who also lost on the road this weekend.
Marta Suarez had her best game in a month with 15 points, 12 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Suarez shot an efficient 53.8% from the field and recorded her sixth double-double of the season against the Lady Raiders. Suarez has looked like her early season self the past few games which is a great sign for this TCU team moving forward. Suarez’s ability to shoot the three and score through contact in the paint provides an important secondary scoring element to the Horned Frog offense. Olivia Miles did not have her most efficient game but still tallied 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and one steal. TCU did a solid job limiting turnovers in a hostile environment against an aggressive defense thanks in part to Miles limiting her own turnovers as primary ball handler to just three. Donovyn Hunter was the third Frog in double figures with 11 points, two rebounds and one steal. Hunter has recently found her shooting touch, scoring in double figures in four of her last five games. Maddie Scherr returned from injury against Texas Tech and had an impact on both ends of the floor with seven points, three rebounds and three steals. Scherr is one of TCU’s best perimeter defenders and her return to the floor helped the TCU defense tremendously.
TCU struggled from three point range against Texas Tech, shooting just 28% from beyond the arc as a team. The Horned Frogs did a great job of adjusting, however, as they dominated points in the paint by a margin of 34-14. Despite TCU’s increased volume of shots in the paint, the Frogs only attempted five free throws as a team compared to 17 free throws for Texas Tech. TCU did a great job of limiting turnovers with just 11 as a team. Texas Tech’s major statistical advantage in this game was in rebounding as the Lady Raiders collected 46 rebounds compared to 34 from the Frogs. TCU struggled to end defensive possessions with a rebound as Texas Tech grabbed 15 offensive boards. Outside of rebounding, TCU played a solid defensive game, limiting Texas Tech to just 32% shooting from the field. If TCU was able to keep the rebounding battle closer, the Frogs most likely would have escaped Lubbock with a win.
The Horned Frogs will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday as they are set to take on Houston at 6:30 pm in Fort Worth. The Cougars have had a tough 2025-2026 season, sitting at 7-14 on the year and 1-9 in Big 12 play. Houston did win their last game in a thriller over Cincinnati by a score of 72-70.
