In recent days, the reports on the likelihood of Dayot Upamecano signing a contract extension have indicated that two major roadblocks (a signing bonus and a release clause) have become prevalent in the contract talks between the player’s camp and the club.
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen re-emphasized that the club wants to bring back Upamecano and also that the environment will provide stability around the squad.
“It’s common knowledge that we want to extend Upamecano’s contract. And I also
believe we have nothing to be ashamed of regarding what we’ve offered him. It [the offer] reflects the outstanding performances Upa has delivered this season. Other factors often play a role in such a decision, not just the financial aspect. It shouldn’t be about every last euro,” Dreesen told Abendzeitung’s Maximilian Koch (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The fact that the coach and coaching staff have extended their contracts is just as important. It’s also about whether the family feels comfortable, whether he has a good standing within the team and with the coach. Whether he’s playing for an ambitious club that actually wins things. Whether we’re playing attractive football. And I think those are good reasons for him to stay at FC Bayern.”
However, when asked if he was confident that Upamecano would ultimately ink an extension, Dreesen did not want to express anything like that. Instead, he put the onus on Max Eberl and Christoph Freund to express their opinion on the matter.
“That’s a question that mainly concerns Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. They are in good talks with Upa. I’d like to leave it at that assessment for now,” Dreesen stated.
In less than two weeks, Upamecano can formally talk to other clubs and at that point, we will all find out just how serious Upamecano is about his rumored requests for a signing bonus and a short-term release clause.
