Last weekend, Tottenham Hotspur Women rolled to a dominant 3-1 home win over West Ham in their first Women’s Super League match of the season. Today they face what could be a stiffer test — a road trip to St. Helens to face Liverpool Women.
Liverpool find themselves at the top of the table thanks to a 4-0 shellacking of former Spurs manager Karen Hills and WSL debutants Charlton Athletic. Spurs should be a much tougher nut to crack. Liverpool were picked by most to finish mid-table, which wouldn’t
be a bad result considering they’re rebuilding the squad and gradually strengthening. New striker and German international forward Vivian Endemann is an astute signing who could make some noise in the league this season; she picked up a goal and an assist in last weekend’s win. Liverpool also have a robust fan support and can be dangerous at home; Spurs split the series last season, winning 2-1 at home and losing 2-0 away. This is a Reds team that could surprise.
Martin Ho is still being cautious with new star defensive signing Alice Sombath, and striker Tinka Tandberg has yet to get off the mark for Spurs, but they have plenty of ways to score, including Kirsty Hanson, Julie Blakstad, Signe Gaupset, and Olivia Holdt. If Tandberg can’t get looks, you can expect Spurs will find chances elsewhere.
This won’t be an easy match, by any means, but if Spurs Women can set the stage early for a top four challenge with a win today. COYSW!
