Wisconsin Badgers star guard John Blackwell is entering the transfer portal ahead of his senior season, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.
Blackwell, a junior this season, is also testing the NBA Draft waters once again, and will have one year of eligibility remaining at his next destination. The guard immediately becomes one of the best available players in the transfer portal and will certainly get some major interest from some of the top schools in the country.
It was going to be an uphill climb
for the Badgers to retain Blackwell for a second consecutive season, and the Badgers will now look to pivot elsewhere with another roster spot open for the transfer portal.
This season, Blackwell averaged 19.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, while shooting 43 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from three. That was a bump up from his sophomore campaign, when Blackwell had more of a lead guard role and averaged 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.
Over the weekend, the Badgers landed a commitment from Australian guard Owen Foxwell, who figures to slot into the vacant starting point guard role left by Nick Boyd. Now, the next question is figuring out his backcourt mate next season, and Wisconsin should have a clearer financial picture now with Blackwell off to the transfer portal.
Blackwell is the third Badgers player to enter the transfer portal, joining Jack Robison and Riccardo Greppi.
