The 2026 FIFA World Cup will have 48 teams, but the team that has the most focus is the United States Men’s National Team. They will compete in Group D at the tournament alongside Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye in what is arguably the most important group stage for the USMNT in its history.
The United States had the luxury of being placed in a group with three teams which it coincidentally saw in friendlies in the back half of 2025—a 2-1 loss to Türkiye in June, a 2-1 win over Australia in October,
and a 2-1 win over Paraguay in November. The World Cup will be different, as the pressure will be exponentially greater to win in front of the home fans.
In Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye, the group is solid. It’s one of the deepest groups in the entire tournament, and the order of finish could be in any order. There will be some pivotal moments, but the co-hosts will be the main focus and will hold the bulk of the pressure when they take the field every matchday. And, they will have the most scrutiny. In a World Cup that the United States is co-hosting alongside Canada and Mexico, the USMNT have arguably received the most critical analysis. And with the eyes of the world zooming in on the biggest sporting event in the world’s history, the USMNT hope they can be the biggest positive and inspire a nation in the process.

Game of the group – Türkiye vs. USA (June 25th)
The match between the USMNT and Türkiye on June 25th could be the match that determines who wins Group D. As the two highest ranked teams in the group, it’s possible that their final matchday clash in LA would determine who moves on to the Bay Area as Group D winners and who goes to Dallas or even slides into the knockout stage as the 3rd place team.
Predictions
- United States
- Türkiye
- Australia
- Paraguay
The United States answers the call to perform under pressure, winning twice and earning a draw to win Group D and head to the Round of 32 in the Bay Area. Türkiye heads to Dallas as the runner-up to face the runner-up from Group G (Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand). Australia will qualify by finishing third just over Paraguay in the group, but they have to face a tough group winner in the Round 32: likely Germany, France, or Portugal.
