1912
The White Sox win their first game ever played at Fenway Park, 5-2. The matchup was the first among the early titans of the season, with the White Sox coming to Boston at 21-6 and the Red Sox in second place in the AL, at 16-8.
The game didn’t turn out to look like one between the two best in the league, as eight total errors were committed in the game, four from each side.
Boston rallied immediately off of Ed Walsh, with a run-scoring double and GIDP in the first inning. But Walsh shut the door
from there, earning the complete game win. The White Sox, trailing 2-1, waited until they were down to their last out to start their winning rally in the top of the ninth: Walsh singled back to the pitcher, and then a double and intentional walk set up the game-tying … hit-by-pitch, of Frank Lange by Boston starter Larry Pape. An error at second base plated the eventual winning run, and a two-run single scored insurance runs that closed out the scoring.
Walsh improved to 7-2 on the season, and the White Sox moved up to 22-6.
1931
In a deal that wasn’t catastrophic but nonetheless didn’t work out for the White Sox, the club shipped an all-time great third baseman, Willie Kamm, to Cleveland for outfielder Lew Fonseca. Kamm had produced 27.3 WAR in eight-plus seasons for the White Sox, making him their best third baseman ever at the time — and he remains second-best in franchise annals, behind Robin Ventura. (Kamm is the 15th-best hitter and 26th-best player in overall team history). Kamm went on to have four good seasons in Cleveland, tallying 8.3 WAR before his release in 1935.
Fonseca was OK for the remainder of the 1931 season in Chicago (1.4 WAR) but became the club’s player-manager in 1932 and didn’t produce much for the White Sox in his final two seasons (41 games, -0.7 WAR). That said, he didn’t produce much as a manager, either, amassing a 120-196-2 record overall — a .380 winning percentage that is second only to Pedro Grifol among the worst White Sox managers ever to last more at least one full season.
1948
It’s one of the most special birthdays in baseball history: Carlos May, born May 17, which he wore on his White Sox uniform for his entire career. May was the second first round pick in team history (1966), and spent the first eight years of his MLB career in Chicago, peaking in 1972 with 4.3 WAR and a 21st-place finish in MVP voting.
Interestingly, in stops with the Yankees and Angels to complete his career, May did not wear uniform No. 17.
1969
It was one of the few highlights in a dismal season. White Sox pitcher (and one-time Brett Ballantini home run victim) Jerry Nyman one-hit the Senators, winning in Chicago, 6-0.
Nyman allowed only a one-out single in the second inning to Brant Alyea — a comebacker right through the box that Nyman could not get a glove on. Nyman also helped himself with the bat in that game, hitting a bases-loaded double that knocked in three runs.
1991
The first ejection from a game at new Sox Park happens in the top of the ninth inning of a 5-3 White Sox win over Toronto. Glenallen Hill objected to a called third strike from home plate umpire Rocky Roe and was told to grab some bench. The game itself was a sort of pitchers’ duel between veterans Charlie Hough (seven innings, seven hits, two earned, no-decision) and Dave Stieb (6 ⅓ innings, eight hits, two earned, no-decision). What held up as the game-winner was a two-run double in the eighth from Craig Grebeck.
2021
In the White Sox blowout win over the Twins in Minnesota, national controversy erupted centering around the “unwritten” rules of baseball.
With the Sox leading 15-4, the Twins used position player Willians Astudillo to pitch in the ninth inning. During this emergency outing, Astudillo lobbed up a 47 mph floater to Yermín Mercedes, who blasted it over the center field fence. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli took exception to the swing/homer, as did as many baseball traditionalists. White Sox manager Tony La Russa wasn’t happy with it, hopping out of the dugout and waving his arms angrily before Mercedes had reached home plate. La Russa was furious because Mercedes missed a take sign, and that his swing disrespected the game.
Some of Mercedes’ teammates and many Sox fans disagreed, saying that using a position player instead of a regular pitcher also disrespected the game and that until the game is over players are expected to do their best, regardless of the score.
The next day, after the Twins threw at Mercedes, La Russa ignited another controversy when he said that he didn’t think Twins pitcher Tyler Duffey deliberately targeted Mercedes, and that it may have been a pitch that got away from him. Some Sox fans feel this was the moment when La Russa began to lose the clubhouse, and the Sox started sliding back towards mediocrity for the rest of the season and into the 2022 campaign.
A much less controversial milestone from the same game saw White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal as the lone starter not to get a hit in the 16-4 blowout. But he still landed on base four times via walks, scored three times and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Grandal thus became the first player in White Sox history to have three games in one season where he walked four or more times.
