Florian Plettenberg shocked Bayern Munich fans on June 4th, reporting Nathaniel Brown and Die Rekordmeister have reached a full verbal agreement on a transfer. The events that have transpired since have been — admittedly — less shocking.
Bayern is unwilling to meet Frankfurt’s €60m price tag for the 22-year-old left-back. That hasn’t deterred the German record champion’s interest.
In fact, Bayern value the transfer of Brown far higher than their previous pursuit of Anthony Gordon. According to Sport1’s
chief reporter, Stefan Kumberger (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), believes the German international’s price tag can be negotiated.
The supervisory board is particularly impressed by Nathaniel Brown and convinced of his qualities. There’s a consensus within the club’s bosses that signing Brown is significantly more important than acquiring Anthony Gordon would have been. Bayern are unwilling to pay the €60m demanded by Frankfurt, but there’s optimism that the asking price can be lowered, especially since Brown himself is pushing for a move to Munich.
Max Eberl will have significantly more leeway from the supervisory board in the pursuit of Brown than he did recently in the Gordon transfer saga. Everyone at the club is determined to bring Brown to Munich. But even in this case, the principle remains unchanged at Säbener Straße: not at any price.
Even at €60m, Brown is significantly cheaper than Newcastle’s €80m demand for Anthony Gordon. Bayern were reportedly willing to offer up to €70m for Gordon, which is already more than Brown would cost — a point Frankfurt will certainly leverage in their negotiations.
While a “verbal agreement” seems like Brown’s transfer is practically set in stone, it should be noted that Bayern was in the exact same position with Gordon — a transfer is far from guaranteed.
