Real Madrid legend Luka Modric talked to Il Corriere Della Sera and shared his thoughts about his recent move to AC Milan while recapping some moments of his illustrious career.
“I was a Milan fan because of my childhood idol: Zvonimir Boban, the Croatian captain who was about to achieve a feat in the 1998 France World Cup. I wasn’t even thirteen years old, and my father gave me a Milan tracksuit. Life always surprises you. Things happen that you never imagined possible. I was convinced I would finish
my career at Real Madrid, but instead… But I have always thought: if I ever played for another team, it would have been Milan. I am here to win,” said the midfielder.
Modric went on and talked about his current coach, Massimiliano Allegri, while also discussing what makes Ancelotti and Mourinho special.
“Allegri has an incredible personality. He is a bit like Ancelotti: sensitive, funny, and loves to joke around. But on the field, as a coach, he is a master. He knows football like few others. I’m glad he is my coach today. Carletto is number one. Because of who he is, not just for his qualities on the bench. We talked many times about Milan and AC Milan when we were in Madrid. For him too, this place was unique. Mourinho? Special. As a coach and as a person. He was the one who wanted me at Real Madrid. Without Mourinho, I would never have arrived. I saw him make Cristiano Ronaldo cry in the locker room, a man who gives everything on the field, because for once he didn’t chase the opposing fullback. Mourinho is very direct with his players, but he is honest. He treated Sergio Ramos and the latest signing the same way: if he has to tell you something, he tells you,” he explained.
Modric concluded his interview by picking Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Messi in his personal ranking.
“I feel closer to Cristiano because I played with him, he was my teammate at Madrid, and I assure you that he is not only a great footballer, he is an incredible person. People don’t know it, but he has a huge heart, always willing to help others,” he said.
