Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood showed glimpses of greatness throughout his true freshman season, but his overall statistical output was underwhelming compared to preseason expectations.
In addition
to first-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Chip Lindsey working with Underwood, the Wolverines leaned on assistant quarterback coaches Travis Russell and Josh Sinagoga. But heading into 2026, it sounds like head coach Sherrone Moore is looking at adding a dedicated quarterbacks coach to his staff.
“Something we’re definitely looking at is bringing in other people to help, and bringing in another quarterback coach. That’s something we’re working diligently on,” Moore told the media on Monday. “Josh and Travis have helped as well, and Chip was there as the mainstay helping out with him being the quarterbacks coach. So we’ll move it around however we feel necessary.”
Underwood is a dynamic and talented player with as much potential as any quarterback in the country, but he has a tendency to have loose footwork and rush through his progressions. It’s normal for a freshman quarterback to go through growing pains, but the addition of a dedicated quarterbacks coach this offseason would be greatly beneficial for his future.
Moore also discussed Underwood’s strengths, weaknesses and where he needs to improve the most next year.
“I think just learning the playbook and knowing what’s going on,” Moore said. “He was able to make some spectacular throws throughout the year, throwing on the move and in the pocket, but I think just continue to work on the little fundamentals. Make sure your feet are right, make sure your eyes are exactly where they need to be, and not looking at the pass rush.”
Underwood finished the regular season with 2,229 passing yards with a 61.1 percent completion rate, 14 total touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 323 yards. It’s clear Underwood has a chance to be special, but he has a long way to go to reach his full potential. Michigan must continue developing him, and adding a new quarterbacks coach could be the next step.
“The progression that he’s made has been really good,” Moore said. “And we’re going to continue that.”
