Canadian goalkeeper legend Erin McLeod has announced her retirement from professional soccer.
The two-time Olympic medalist was in rehab after a season-ending knee injury which happened while playing for the Northern Super League’s (NSL) Halifax Tides FC.
“This is not the way I imagined my final season ending but I am incredibly grateful for every moment I’ve had in this game.” said the goalkeeper. “Halifax has welcomed me, made me a part
of their community and given me a chance to be part of something historic with the Northern Super League. While I won’t be finishing this season on the pitch, I’m proud to have been part of this inaugural season.”
The legend signed for Halifax back in October and although she played only six games, the club is grateful for all her contributions.
“Erin brought experience, knowledge and a kind style of leadership to help this club develop a tight-knit locker room culture and she did this all while becoming a new parent because of her love of the game and love for our country,” said Tides sporting director Amit Batra.
After an illustrious career representing Canada and playing in several countries, she will be honoured in a post-match ceremony on Sept. 27, following the home game against the Vancouver Rise at the Wanderers Grounds.
McLeod also played in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for both Chicago Stars, Houston Dash, and Orlando Pride.
And while she hangs up the boots, she won’t stay away from soccer since the goalkeeper has accepted a position with Inter Halifax Soccer Club as technical consultant and head of player development.
