On March the 3rd, 2020, Bayern Munich traveled to Gelsenkirchen to take on Bundesliga side Schalke 04 in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinals. It was a difficult game but Bayern emerged on top due to a long-range Joshua Kimmich strike to make the Bavarians’ #32 the match winner. Thomas Müller started up top, Philippe Coutinho out wide while the midfield was manned by Corentin Tolisso and Thiago Alcantara. This would be the last time Bayern would make it to and win in the quarterfinals of the German cup competition
for five years.
They got closest to making to the final four in the 2022/23 season but fell to SC Freiburg in Thomas Tuchel’s second game in charge.
But now Bayern has succeeded in clearing that hurdle. A difficult but well-deserved 2-0 victory has lifted Bayern into the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal, a tear-jerking underdog run that truly exemplifies the magic of the cup.
