Spain boss Luis de la Fuente wants to see Lamine Yamal make Portugal’s defence suffer on Monday when the two teams meet in the last 16 of the World Cup.
The Spain boss was asked if he wants to see more defensive effort from Yamal but made it clear he wants to see the teenager causing problems for the Portugal backline.
“Lamine is always willing to work harder, but we shouldn’t ask more of him. We’re all delighted with what he gives us. What we need to do is make the opposing defense suffer, knowing
that if they take the initiative, everyone will have to suffer,” he told reporters.
“I see him getting more motivated every day. Those of you who know him know this; Lamine loves responsibility, being in the spotlight, taking the initiative. That’s why we’re working on that aspect: 0% anxiety, 100% motivation. It’s a joy to watch him train. I’m sure it will be a great match for him; he has all the ingredients for it to be.”
De la Fuente also previewed Yamal’s duel with Nuno Mendes and says the teenager shouldn’t worry about previous encounters against the PSG defender.
“Nuno Mendes has surely been a tough nut to crack for many defenders; he’s very good. Just as Lamine has undoubtedly given many defenders a rough night,” he added.
“But above all, he needs to avoid anxiety. He needs to focus on himself and the team, as he does. Every match is different. Let’s not assume that just because an opponent beats you once, they’ll always do it. Let’s hope he gives us a glorious afternoon.”
