The biggest news that fans of the United States Men’s National Team are waiting for is the decision by current head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Will he accept the contract extension that U.S. Soccer offered before the start of the World Cup? That’s the question that U.S. Soccer hopes will be answered soon.
Midfielder Tyler Adams spoke with Stars & Stripes FC this week as part of his work with Allstate opening up a mini-pitch in Atlanta. He took the time during that interview to explain the impact Pochettino
had on him and the rest of the USMNT.
“I’ve been very fortunate with the managers I’ve been able to work under and learn from. [How] Pochettino leads a group of people and the culture he leads with is so important,” Adams said. “Put the tactics and how he improved me as a player aside, how he improved me as a person, the intangibles and the culture he created was incredible.”
Pochettino led the USMNT to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, setting a record for most USMNT wins at a single World Cup in the process. Since he took over as head coach in September 2024, he has a 17W-12L-2D record. During the World Cup, he had the team competing at their highest ability until it all fell apart in the Round of 16 against Belgium. Still, having a full cycle of Pochettino, despite the history with coaches getting a second cycle, could bring some continuity that the team hasn’t had in quite some time.
Pochettino has said that a decision on his future will come soon. Should he continue as coach, it seems like he will have a player pool that will fight for him as they attempt to build on the foundation they’ve set and keep fans engaged and supportive. World Cup qualifying begins next fall, but they have Concacaf Nations League as well as the 2027 Gold Cup before that. Pochettino’s decision will affect the team’s approach to those competitions.
