Ahead of tonight’s game in Anaheim, the Yankees announced that they’ve activated Ryan McMahon from the injured list. They also added John Schreiber to the active roster.
Rosters expand to 28 today, giving the Yankees flexibility to add their starting third baseman back, as well as an extra relief arm. McMahon suffered a sprained thumb sliding into second base against the Orioles about two weeks ago and went through a very brief rehab assignment over the weekend, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts with Scranton
on Saturday.
McMahon’s numbers on the season are unimpressive, the 31-year-old in possession of a .216/.282/.367 slash line with just ten home runs. Still, his return will be welcome. McMahon got off a pretty miserable start to the year, but over his last three months of play he’s slashed a much more palatable .240/.301/.430 while playing his trademark quality defense at the hot corner. Notably, the Yankees’ defense on the left side of the infield has been very suspect since McMahon went down, something that they’ll hope McMahon can augment.
The 32-year-old Schreiber arrives after being claimed off waivers from the Royals. The right-hander was in the midst of a superficially good campaign with Kansas City, but his 3.65 ERA was belied by weak strikeout and walk rates, and subsequently a 4.87 FIP. That said, Schreiber was once a very fine middle reliever, posting a 3.33 ERA and 3.50 FIP across the 2022 to 2025 seasons, which he split between the Royals and the Red Sox. With the Yankee bullpen in a state of flux, Schreiber should have an opportunity to prove himself over the next month.
