Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany thinks that you can throw away his team’s previosu win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
To Kompany, who had to alter training on Thursday due to a consistent snowfall, it was a different time and now there is a new coach, which should boost Die Adler.
“We just played against Werder Bremen, and there was a coaching change there too. You have to plan with what you can see. We saw what Frankfurt did in their last two games and what their coach did with his previous teams.
We have to be prepared to be flexible in our game. We have many options to be flexible in our matches. There’s a new coach, but it’s the same players, and we have the same players, too,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “(Thursday), for the first time, I had the feeling — we’re an Alpine club. I didn’t grow up with this situation. I sought advice from my Austrian and Bavarian colleagues. We resolved it very quickly, we didn’t continue training as planned because it would have been too dangerous. Nevertheless, we did our runs and did everything we wanted physically.”
The match-up will feature a duel between two coaches with Manchester City ties.
“(Albert Riera) was at Manchester City a year before I arrived. It’s a small world, we all know each other somehow. As a player, he covered a lot of ground and was a good crosser of the ball. But that was 20 years ago, my memory isn’t that good. After his stints in England and Spain, he wasn’t afraid to work in countries like Slovenia. I like this path. It will give him a lot for the future and be a strength for him,” Kompany said.
Of course, Jonas Urbig will be taking over for the injured Manuel Neuer this weekend. Kompany wants the youngster to know that the club has his back, but Urbig might not be the only regular bench player in the starting XI. Rumors are swirling that Kompany could sit both Joshua Kimmich and Jonathan Tah because they are both sitting on four yellow cards.
“Manuel Neuer is doing well, but won’t be available tomorrow,” said Kompany. “Jonas Urbig will start. We need to project that we trust him 100%. Jonas Urbig has shown what he can do. But even last year, he was in goal for the Champions League round of 16 in Leverkusen, even though he hadn’t had many appearances before that. We already had confidence in him back then, and we showed it from the beginning. That’s important with young players, and we showed that with Lennart Karl as well.”
“I’m only focused on the Frankfurt game. We know about the situation with the yellow cards, but you can’t plan for everything. The only important thing right now is that we win at home against Frankfurt tomorrow. There’s no hierarchy for games; all games are equally important. Starting next week, we can all enjoy this Clasico feeling together. But right now, it’s all about Frankfurt. The yellow cards aren’t a topic; we have to be smart, but not overly smart.”
