Hansi Flick has spoken for the last time about Dro Fernández’s surprising decision to leave Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain this week.
Dro shocked the entire club when he informed them of his choice to
leave in search of more playing time in France, and Flick had a very strong initial response in which he didn’t address Dro directly but made it very clear he was hurt and angry with the people around Dro who influenced the teenager’s decision to leave so abruptly.
But speaking at a press conference on Friday, Flick had a softer stance on the matter, saying he respects Dro’s decision and that he accepts that things are out of your control in football.
“I’ve changed my mind, I don’t want to say anything anymore. I really loved this boy. Of course I am disappointed. But it’s football. We have to respect this decision. I am disappointed of course. He knows it, but I loved this boy. Here he also had a great future. He made another decision. I respect it, this is football.
The phrase “I really loved this boy” is kind of heartbreaking to read now that the saga is over, and it makes it very clear that Flick truly believed in Dro’s potential even if he wasn’t playing much. But hey, time for all of us to move on.
