There is no replacement for watching your own team compete in the National League Championship Series. Fans of the San Diego Padres have had the privilege of watching their team compete for a pennant a few times, with their most recent trip pitting them against the Philadelphia Phillies. The team from the National League East knocked off the Padres and advanced to the World Series where the Phillies would fall to the Houston Astros.
This season was supposed to be another opportunity for San Diego
to use the strength of the lineup with veterans like Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts and the young superstardom of Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill to propel themselves to the game’s summit. That did not happen and the Milwaukee Brewers won the National League Division Series over the Padres with a record of 3-1. The reward for the Brewers was a matchup against the Nationals League West Division champions and two-time defending World Series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Friars Faithful could sit and wonder about what might have been had a ball not hit the roof, had Mason Miller been able to get one more out and had a ball hit deep to centerfield traveled another foot-and-a-half further in the final game of the NLDS. Once the what ifs have been tallied, the Faithful have to sit back and watch Milwaukee take on Los Angeles.
The NLCS started on Sunday and the Brewers took game one with their top arm Jacob Misiorowski beating one of the manny Dodgers aces Tarik Skubal. Game 2 was supposed to provide an opportunity for Los Angeles to even the series with World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the mound, but William Contreras powered Milwaukee to the win, giving the Brewers a 2-0 lead with the series shifting to Los Angeles. Can Milwaukee get two more wins over the next five games, Padres fans and much of the baseball world is hoping so because no one is ready to hear Dodgers manager Dave Roberts talk about how his scrappy team, which everyone doubted came out of nowhere to win the World Series.
