According to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, the Denver Broncos have waived rookie offensive lineman Gavin Ortega today.
Ortega was another one of those undrafted free agents the Broncos brought in earlier this year. He was a 35-game starter at Weber State. Given he is coming from the FCS, there will likely be a learning curve as he transitions to the NFL level. After the draft, Head Coach Sean Payton did note that Ortega was one of two undrafted rookie
lineman that had draftable grades and that should bode well for his immediate future.
The two undrafted rookie offensive linemen they added this offseason are Iowa State’s Tyler Miller and Weber State’s Gavin Ortega. Miller is a massive offensive tackle who comes in at nearly 6-9, 324 pounds with 34-inch arms and good athleticism. Ortega doesn’t have the opposing size (6-5, 304 pounds); however, he is another guard/tackle who can provide the Broncos with more depth and versatility along their offensive line.
I would say he has a good chance to be added to the 16-man practice squad in Denver later this week.
