Things got a little better on Sunday morning for the Cowboys as the Eagles fell to the Jaguars thanks to late-game heroics from Jacksonville. Then, the Giants and Commanders game ended in a tie due to poor clock management from Washington. While a Commanders win would be preferable, it was a good Sunday for the Cowboys, all things considered.
To win the division, though, Dallas will have to start stringing together back-to-back wins. Back-to-back wins have been rare in the Schottenheimer era. All
in all, we can enjoy a Sunday without the disappointment of Cowboys football.
Updated NFC East Standings: Wild NFL Sunday Benefits Cowboys After Week 5- Randy Gurzi, Sports Illustrated
Although Thursday night was an upsetting game for Cowboys fans, there is a silver lining after Sunday’s action. The rest of the NFC East is doing the Cowboys favors by giving them an opportunity to climb back into the division.
2. Philadelphia Eagles (2-3)
Right now, the Philadelphia Eagles have the tiebreaker over the Cowboys because they are 1-0 in the NFC East, compared to 1-1 for Dallas. They should be 3-2, however, after taking a lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars with eight seconds to play.
NFC East Is For Losers: Cowboys Joined By Incompetence Across Division – Adam Schultz, Yahoo Sports
The division is still wide open thanks to help from other teams. However, to take advantage of the lack of success from other teams, they will need to string together wins. A task they have only done once in the Schottenheimer era.
Add it up, and incredibly, all four NFC East teams played this weekend … and they combined for zero wins!
The division remains there for the taking, but …
Why can’t the Cowboys win back-to-back games? That is one question we are all asking in the aftermath of the 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night.
Cowboys’ possession battle woes, ruinous defensive penalties among maddening Week 5 stats- Todd Brock, Cowboys Wire
It has been well documented that the Cowboys are the only team without a defensive interception this season. And in the moment they could have changed that and flipped the outcome of the Thursday Night Football game, they failed.
0: Interceptions by defense… on the year
DaRon Bland’s blatant drop in the fourth quarter likely would have given the Cowboys a go-ahead touchdown with under four minutes to play and might have sealed a Week 5 win, but it also would have snapped a rather ugly streak of futility.

5 Coaches Who Could Take the Cowboys to the Next Level- Cody Warren, Inside The Star
During a long week, it may be a good time to think about what if. Granted, Schottenheimer absolutely has time to turn the ship around, but if it doesn’t happen Jerry and the organization needs to think about what’s next.
1. Kirby Smart Has Earned the Top Spot
Smart’s two National Championships at the University of Georgia put him first on my list, but what happened between those two titles is interesting.
Georgia lost eight defenders to the 2022 NFL Draft, including five first round picks. The next team won another championship while allowing 16.0 points per game.
Christian Parker turning Matt Eberflus into a sympathetic figure is rock bottom- Jerry Trotta, The Landry Hat
No fan expected the Cowboys to go from worst to first defensively simply by hiring Christian Parker and getting an exciting new rookie safety. However, possibly regressing after a horrific 2025 defensive campaign seemed equally unlikely.
Former Cowboys wide receiver Jesse Holley echoed a similar sentiment, tweeting that “Parker is actually doing much less with much more, making his job performance worse than Matt Eberflus.”
Being a prisoner of the moment is natural after an embarrassing primetime loss. This isn’t that. There’s real credence to the idea that Parker has been worse than Eberflus.
