The Los Angeles Rams are back above .500 after beating the Washington Commanders 20-13
, but their latest victory also reinforced that this offense could still use another playmaker. Getting back on the winning side of the standings is an important step, particularly as the Rams look to establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the NFC. However, there is still a difference between winning games and having the offensive firepower necessary to make a deep postseason run.On the other side of
the ball, the combination of Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald is quickly proving to be something special. The two defensive forces bring a level of disruption that few offenses can realistically prepare for. The Rams have plenty to feel good about, but this victory also offered a reminder that there is still work to be done.
1st Down: Offense desperate for a complimentary piece
Yes the offense is missing Davante Adams and Terrance Ferguson but the Rams offense lacks juice right now. Davante Adams is still going to miss another 4-7 weeks and Ferguson is dealing with multiple injuries with his ankle and now hamstring.
Tutu Atwell and Tyler Higbee provide some moments but they are few and far between. They need a guy that can win consistently against man and zone. There are multiple wide receivers likely on the trade block going into the trade deadline. Brian Thomas Jr (JAX), Josh Downs (IND), and George Pickens (DAL) are probably the best three. If the Rams really wanted to go all in with Stafford-Nacua-Donald-Garrett-McDuffie, then it makes sense to truly go all in.
Mark Schlereth also pointed out that the current options at WR and TE just are not consistent at coming out of the breaks on their routes. It’s leaving Stafford continuously frustrated.
Lastly, banking on Davante Adams to be 100% healthy when he returns is foolish. It would be more prudent to acquire a guy that can be part of the present and future considering Adams is in his contract year.
2nd Down: Aaron Donald & Myles Garrett duo is SPECIAL
“Pick your poison.” Myles Garrett said this week when the Rams activated him and announced he would play in Week 9. Offensive lines can’t block both. And against the Commanders, Washington chose to block Aaron Donald. Myles Garrett responded by totaling 3 sacks and a forced fumble.
The Rams vision of Aaron Donald & Myles Garrett is now in full swing.
3rd Down: Two straight weeks of 3rd down woes…
Last week against the Chargers, the Rams were 3 of 11 (27%). Against the Commanders, the Rams offense was 3 of 14 (21%). That’s a 24% conversion rate against teams that are a combined 2-11-1…
4th Down: Emmanuel Forbes performs well enough in starting role
The former first round pick for the Commanders was waived after 1+ seasons with Washington. Los Angeles claimed him and is now in his third season with Chris Shula.
Forbes was beat in the first half by Van Jefferson for a touchdown but Forbes battled throughout the afternoon. He had a couple of pass breakups, including a big one on 3rd down and 4th down.
