Today’s roster move: Here
Thursday notes:
- THE DOG DAYS OF AUGUST: OPS of Cubs’ regulars in August: .901: Matt Shaw. .704: Nico Hoerner. .691 : Ian Happ. .670: Dansby Swanson. .630: Seiya Suzuki. .604: Kyle Tucker. .602: Michael Busch. .512: Carson Kelly. .484: Pete Crow-Armstrong. The team OPS of .629 is 29th, 10 points behind Orioles’ .639. Guardians are last by far at .586. Average of all 30 teams is .731. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- DROPPING TWO: This is just the sixth of the Cubs’ 43 series in which they lost the first two games. There was no third game in one previous series. They won the third game of the four others: at St. Louis, Minnesota and Milwaukee, and at home vs. the Reds. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- DON’T GET SWEPT: The last time the Cubs were swept in a series of at least three games was Aug. 12-14 of last year, at Cleveland. This series is their 56th of any length since then, 13 last year and 43 this year. Their record in those series is 100-74. With the Reds losing a third straight game against the Dodgers at Los Angeles last night, the Cubs are the only team that has not been swept in a series of at least three games. - THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: The Cubs sweep a doubleheader from the Reds by identical 5-2 scores. Keith Moreland’s three-run homer in the first inning of the first game gives the Cubs a lead they never relinquished, and Moreland went 3-for-4 in the second game to lead the Cubs to victory. It happened 41 years ago today, Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1984.
The Cubs lineup was not available at posting time. Please check BCB social media for the Cubs lineup.
Giants lineup:
Shōta Imanaga, LHP vs. Logan Webb, RHP

Shōta Imanaga has a 2.81 ERA in five starts since that outing against the White Sox where he was hit really hard. The Cubs are just 2-3 in those five games —
in the three losses they scored only four total runs. Imanaga doesn’t have enough innings to be a qualified starter this year due to the time he missed with a hamstring injury, but if he did he’d rank about 110th of 123 qualified starters in run support this year.
So I think we can expect Shōta to post another good outing. Then it’ll be up to Cubs hitters to support him. He has not faced the Giants this year.
Logan Webb is having another good year. For the last five years he’s been one of the better starters in the league, but doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for that. Last five starts: 2.03 ERA (2.18 FIP), 1.129 WHIP, only one home run in 31 innings.
He has not faced the Cubs this year. One Cub who has hit him in the past: Ian Happ (4-for-11, .364, two doubles, a home run).
