Football competitions around the world are becoming bigger and beefier by the day. According to Telegraph Football (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the UEFA Super Cup seems next in line for an expansion.
As most football fans know, the UEFA Super Cup is an annual one-off match between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League. The most recent match was played between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, with PSG winning after a thrilling comeback and a penalty shootout. However,
Telegraph is reporting that the match could be expanded into a four-team tournament, with two semifinals and a final, following the likes of the Supercopa de España and the Supercoppa Italiana.
The format is not the only aspect to follow in Spain and Italy’s footsteps, though. Apparently, the location of the Super Cup may be moved to outside of Europe. Spain and Italy have been holding their Super Cups mainly in the Middle East, with the Spanish version being contractually bound to being hosted in Saudi Arabia until at least 2029. Likewise, the UEFA Super Cup could be hosted in the Middle East as well. The United States, hosts of the past Club World Cup and upcoming World Cup, is also a possible destination.
That being said, it is unlikely that the changes will be met with much enthusiasm. Concerns over fixture congestion have spiked over the 2024/25 season, especially with the expanded European competitions and Club World Cup. Very few teams, if any, are likely to relish the prospect of adding thousands of miles of travel and another match to their already packed calendars.
Bayern Munich have won the UEFA Super Cup twice, in 2013 and 2020, both courtesy of Javi Martínez.
