MLB.com defines a “no-trade clause” as “a contractual clause that allows players to veto trades to certain teams. No-trade clauses are often worked into contract extensions and free-agent contracts as a perk for the players signing such deals.”
Such a contractual element gives a player considerable control over their future.
Case in point? Jacob deGrom, who used his no-trade clause to stop a proposed trade by the Texas Rangers.
