The Pittsburgh Steelers had plenty of representation in Morgantown, West Virginia, on Saturday evening to scout promising 2027 quarterback prospect Drew Mestemaker. Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl was among the Steelers brass in attendance for the showdown between the Mountaineers and the Cowboys.
Mestemaker has been a steady
riser on boards ahead of the 2027 NFL Draft after his performance against the then No. 6-ranked Oregon Ducks, in which he outplayed another potential top 2027 pick, Dante Moore, in the contest. Although we won’t know for sure, it’s hard to imagine the Steelers scouts and Weidl were disappointed in what they saw from the quarterback on Saturday.
The redshirt sophomore went 20-of-27 for 389 yards, while tossing three touchdowns and an interception in the contest. Mestemaker and the Cowboys’ passing attack exploded in the second half, eventually leading to a 41-24 victory over the previously unbeaten Mountaineers.
Mestemaker has prototypical size, standing six foot three inches tall, and showcased serious arm talent on Saturday. The quarterback completed three passes of over 45 yards in the second half. Mestemaker was consistently on time with his receivers and made good decisions with the ball. The deep ball looked effortless, as the North Texas transfer layered throws over defenders with great accuracy.
Potential 2027 wide receiver prospect Wyatt Young also showed out, hauling in 8 balls for 192 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The 2027 NFL Draft is still seven months away, but Weidl and the Steelers are already doing their due diligence by checking out one of the draft’s top quarterback prospects.
