Newcastle United’s search for midfield reinforcements remains active despite agreeing a deal for Monaco youngster Aladji Bamba, with a particular name starting to generate more and more buzz each passing day.
We all know the Magpies will be forced to reshape their midfield following Sandro Tonali’s departure, while uncertainty continues to surround captain Bruno Guimaraes amid Arsenal’s interest and could deal a second blow to Newcastle and the middle of its pitch.
According to the Mirror’s Fasika
Zelealem, Newcastle is seriously pursuing Botafogo midfielder Danilo Santos, with the Brazil international viewed as a player capable of strengthening Eddie Howe’s options in the center of the pitch.
“Another midfield addition Newcastle are pursuing is Brazil international Danilo Santos,” Zelealem wrote. “His adaptability in both the six and eight roles makes him an attractive proposition for Howe, alongside his prior experience in English football.”
The Mirror adds the 25-year-old is valued at around £25 million after reviving his career since returning to Brazil from Nottingham Forest, with the first links emerging mid-July from Brazilian outlets.
Danilo spent two seasons in the Premier League before joining Botafogo, where he rediscovered his best form and earned a place in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The latest report follows earlier claims from Chronicle Live that Newcastle had indeed identified Danilo as a genuine midfield target, with Botafogo valuing him at approximately €29 million (£25 million).
Chronicle Live reported the Brazilian club would prefer to keep the midfielder but could be persuaded to sell if Newcastle meets its valuation, while Danilo’s versatility and previous Premier League experience make him an appealing option after the club missed out on Johan Manzambi, who chose Aston Villa instead of Tyneside.
Danilo has enjoyed an impressive campaign since returning to his homeland, scoring 10 goals and assisting on three more in 20 appearances across all competitions for Botafogo while forcing his way back into the Brazil national team.
With Bamba expected to add another young option in midfield and perhaps not yet ready to step into the XI, Newcastle’s pursuit of Danilo suggests the club is looking to add someone with experience in both first-team and Premier League football as Howe rebuilds the most important part of his squad.
