(Sports Illustrated) Good, Bad and Ugly from D-backs’ Season-Threatening Loss to Dodgers
After squandering a chance to win a needed series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona dropped two of three,
and now may be forced to sweep the San Diego Padres if they want a chance at a playoff spot.
As ugly as the eventual series loss to LA was, there were still some shining moments. Below is the good, bad and ugly from an overall-distasteful series:
(Los Angeles Times) Dodgers defeat Diamondbacks to clinch their 12th NL West title in 13 seasons
With an 8-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday at Chase Field, the Dodgers clinched their 12th division title in the last 13 years. They ensured that they will open the playoffs at home, even though it will start with a best-of-three wild-card round beginning next Tuesday. And most important, despite their struggles over the last couple months, they feel they are entering October playing the kind of baseball that had eluded them for much of the year, finally starting to feel like they are reaching their tantalizing ceiling.
(AZ Central) Can Arizona Diamondbacks pull off one more improbable weekend to reach MLB playoffs?
The Diamondbacks have been blurring the line between implausible and impossible for the last two months.
So, it should be no big deal for them to stretch the limits of credulity for one more weekend as they try to fang their way into the 2025 postseason after an 8-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sept. 25 at Chase Field.
Right?
Francisco Lindor homered to reach the 30-30 milestone for the second time, Brett Baty went deep and the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 8-5 on Thursday night to remain in position for the final National League wild card.
The Mets built a six-run lead and withstood a shaky outing by rookie Nolan McLean (5-1). They remained a game ahead of Cincinnati in the playoff race, with the Reds beating Pittsburgh 2-1.

(ESPN) Cal Raleigh hits 59th, 60th HRs as Mariners clinch AL West
Cal Raleigh became the seventh player in major league history to hit 60 home runs in a season Wednesday night, launching two solo shots as the Seattle Mariners clinched the American League West with a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.
“It’s crazy. Sixty is — I don’t know what to say,” said Raleigh, who leads the majors in homers. “I didn’t know if I was going to hit 60 in my life. Just tonight, what a way to do it.”
(NBC Sports) The greatest comeback in MLB history might be unfolding right in front of us
Even after a loss to start September, the Tigers were given a 99.8 percent chance that day to win the American League’s Central division by FanGraphs. Detroit’s odds of winning the division would remain at 99.0 percent or higher for the next two weeks, too. With the postseason beginning at month’s end, it appeared likely the Tigers could earn one of the two first-round playoff byes that go to the two division winners with the best records.
Yet beginning Sept. 11, the Tigers lost 11 of their next 12 games to begin a spectacular free-fall — one that could ultimately set MLB history.

(Sports Business Journal) MLB attendance will surpass 70 million fans for third straight year
“We think it’s an important milestone. It was kind of a goal of ours, so we take a lot of satisfaction in that,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told Sports Business Journal. “There’s no question that the minor league ballparks were not helpful in terms of our overall attendance numbers. But even though that current was running against us, we still managed to get above 70 million, and I’m still hopeful we’re going to get above last year’s number.”
