A flagrant foul on “Pig” Johnson, a technical foul on Massamba Diop and a technical foul on Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley led to No. 5 seeded Iowa State shooting six consecutive free throws at the 2:52 mark of the first half. The Cyclones (26-6, 12-6 Big 12) converted on 5-of-6 and coasted to a 91-42 victory over the No. 12 seeded Sun Devils (17-16, 7-11 Big 12) in the second round of the Big 12 Conference tournament on Wednesday.
The 49 point victory
is the largest margin of victory in Big 12 Tournament history.
Wednesday’s game was decided early with Iowa State taking a commanding 45-16 lead at halftime, before pouring on 46 points in the final 20 minutes. The Cyclone defense was stifling, forcing 23 turnovers from the Sun Devils. ISU scored 25 points off of turnovers and outscored ASU 44-26 in the paint.
Offensively, Iowa State was led by Milan Momcilovic, who poured in 21 points, including four three-point baskets, on 6-of-11 shooting. Joshua Jefferson joined Milan in scoring 20 points. Jefferson also grabbed 12 rebounds and had four assists in 31 minutes of action.
Blake Buchanan contributed 17 points and Tamin Lipsey scored 11 as the only other Cyclones in double figures. The bench contributed a total of 18 points, with Jamarion Batemon adding a bench high nine points.
Iowa State shot 33-of-65 (50.8%) from the field, including 10-of-25 (40%) from beyond the arc. The Cyclones also outrebounded Arizona State 38-32, including 14 offensive rebounds, which led to 17 second-chance points, 15 more than the Sun Devils.
Buenos Aires native and San Diego transfer Santiago Trouet led Arizona State in scoring, with 13 points. He also pulled down a team high 10 rebounds.
No. 5 seeded Iowa State faces No. 4 seeded Texas Tech Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the T-Mobile Center.
