After Bayern Munich’s Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain, Lothar Matthäus does not think that the Bavarians should change their attack-heavy approach.
“With an attacking style of play, you obviously can’t defend everything. Of course, they’ve conceded many goals, but they are still very successful this season and are close to winning the double. They have reached the Champions League semi-finals. Bayern certainly didn’t show their best performance in the second leg against Paris Saint-Germain,
but they still thrilled us throughout the year. I’m looking forward to every Bayern game because they are always a highlight with their high-scoring games. FC Bayern stands for spectacle, they’ve shown that this year. I wouldn’t deviate from this approach,” Matthäus told RTL (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The Bayern Munich and Germany great does make a strong point, but there could be a way to find a happy medium with some flexibility — as Luis Enrique showed in the second leg draw. After Enrique boasted all week about not changing anything, the PSG coach went pretty conservative for most of the second leg, eliminating any chance for Bayern Munich to come all the way back to win the tie.
Just about everyone loves the way that Bayern Munich attacks, but until the club wins a Champions League title. with this style, there will likely be some detractors, who think that it can work in this big moments.
