It was clear very early in his college career that Shaquille O’Neal was going to be an exceptional player.
He quickly lived up to expectations when he was drafted by the Orlando Magic in the 1992 NBA Draft.
After four years of smashing rims and breaking backboards, O’Neal signed with the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent in 1996. He and Kobe Bryant teamed up to win three straight titles in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
Although his weight and injuries slowed O’Neal down at the end of his career, in his prime, he was absolutely one of the greatest big men in NBA history. Most people would put Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, David Robinson and O’Neal among the league’s best big men.
This video is of his first game with the Lakers. O’Neal was at or near his peak. He was agile, powerful and in a word, unstoppable.
His weight limited him in his later career, but in his mid-twenties?
O’Neal was incredible.
