Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won his second consecutive MVP award, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania:
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has joined the exclusive club of NBA legends who have won back-to-back MVP awards, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Sunday.
The official announcement will be made by the NBA later Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET on Prime Video.
Gilgeous-Alexander, the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder’s superstar, is only the fifth active player to be named the MVP
in consecutive seasons. The others are the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic, Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo, Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry and LeBron James, who accomplished the feat twice, once with the Cleveland Cavaliers and again with the Miami Heat.
Charania goes on to mention that the only retired players to ever win the award twice in a row are in the NBA Hall of Fame.
The 27-year-old Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.1. points, 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals and a career-best 59.7% effective field goal percentage this season for an Oklahoma City Thunder team that won the NBA Title last year, won a league-best 64 regular season games this season, and is 8-0 through their first two rounds of the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
Gilgeous-Alexander was traded by the Los Angeles Clippers after his rookie season in 2019 – along with five unprotected first rounds picks, two pick swaps, and Danilo Gallinari – to the Thunder in exchange for Paul George.
The Thunder play the San Antonio Spurs this Mon. May 18 at 5:30pm in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
