Eleven days after Mike McDaniel’s Dolphins were embarrassed on the road, losing to the Cleveland Browns 31-6 in Week 7, owner Stephen Ross and General Manager Chris Grier agreed to mutually part ways.
This move came after Grier spent over two decades with the team and, ironically enough, one of his better draft classes (it’s early, I know!) in recent memory.
The question for Grier, like when the Dolphins parted ways with Jeff Ireland, Dennis Hickey, Mike Tannenbaum, and all the other ghosts of Miami past, is what’s next.
That answer might surprise you.
According to NFL Insider Josina Anderson, the Browns have been considering bringing in a new front-office hire, and former Dolphins GM Chris Grier is among the candidates. The other is former Las Vegas Raiders GM Tom Telesco.
Now I don’t know about you. But when I think of the Cleveland Browns and how they should approach the franchise’s future… the first name I’m definitely crossing off the list is Grier, the guy who Dolphins fans quite literally just ran out of town, after years of calling for his head, and banners flying over Hard Rock Stadium.
That’s not to say he can’t add a valuable voice to the already established front office because we’ve seen general managers who get fired having success in complementary roles before — I mean, Reggie McKenzie, Marvin Allen, and interim GM Champ Kelly, all fit that bill. So there is a chance he can find success in a lesser role or as an advisor, but if I’m a team in need of a general manager, Grier is not the guy I’m hiring.
With Grier finally out of Miami, Kelly stepped into the interim GM role and has been seen around the team frequently over the last few months. In fact, I feel as though I’ve seen more of Kelly over the latter half of the 2025 season than I ever did Grier, but I could be terribly mistaken. Nevertheless, Ross will have an important decision to make on Miami’s front office and, even more so, on the future of head coach Mike McDaniel.
