Bayern Munich made it 13 wins from as many matches across all competitions so far this season with their 3-0 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Luis Diaz narrowly missing inside of the opening two minutes made it seem like it might be a frustrating afternoon for Bayern against a ‘Gladbach side that are currently desperate for points, but Die Fohlen ultimately started to lose steam in the second half having been reduced to 10 men in the 19th minute, making life all the more difficult for them. Jens
Castrop tackle on Diaz was ruled be worthy of a straight red after VAR after the referee had initially just brandished a yellow.
Goals from Joshua Kimmich (64’), Raphael Guerreiro (69’) and Lennart Karl (81’) rounded out the three points for Vincent Kompany’s side, who cut an incredibly proud figure in the immediate aftermath of Karl’s wonder strike. His presence into the match coincided with Mönchengladbach’s energy levels fading, especially once they had to become more open after Kimmich’s goal – that just left even more space for Bayern to exploit, paving the way for Guerreiro and Karl to grab their goals.
Speaking after the match, board member for spot Max Eberl was highly appreciative of the patience that was on display by Bayern as Mönchengladbach were well organized in resolute in defense before they were eventually broken down. “We could have scored the opener right at the start. But then it was partly a matter of patience, tiring out the opponent and creating more space. We knew we always had the quality to score. In the second half, the moment finally arrived. It was a deserved win,” Eberl explained (via @iMiaSanMia).
Had Castrop not been sent off in the first half, the match might not have been as open in the second half as it was after Kimmich’s goal, so Eberl’s point about missing the early chance is certainly something that’s also in the back of Kompany’s mind. Even with ten men, Eugen Polanski did have a few moments where they broke towards Jonas Urbig’s goal, which could have proven to be far more threatening with eleven men on the pitch.
Bayern Munich traveled to Borussia Mönchengladbach for a Bundesliga tilt featuring the league first-place and last-place teams.
The game went as expected — especially after Gladbach picked up an early red card, which completely shifted the momentum into Bayern Munich’s favor.
It was a daunting task to ask Gladbach to hold strong for over 70 minutes and eventually Die Fohlen just broke down. Ultimately, Bayern Munich walked away with a 3-0 victory over Gladbach.
