At the start of August, the WPBL hosted it’s inaugural opening day. The weather forced a rain delay and there were some growing pains in terms of broadcast presentation but the play on the field shown through with an unforgettable rain soaked final inning comeback victory for the Los Angeles Queens.
The very next day the San Francisco Firebells played their own first game in franchise history. In their first three innings, the Firebells scored an incredible ten runs before costing to their first blowout
victory. They wasted no time making a statement that they were the team to beat in this fledgling league.
The Queens went on to battle through the regular season with an 8-7 record before edging past the New York Heights in a tight semi-finals round in order to punch their ticket to the Championship series.
The Firebells, on the other hand, continued to waltz through all obstacles. They ended the regular season with a 10-5 record and then swept the Boston Hunters in the semi-finals to earn their own spot in the Championship.
The best of five Championship series between the Queens and Firebells has come down to one final matchup. While the Queens came out of the gates battling to an early 2-0 series lead, the Firebells did not roll over when their back was against the wall in games three and four.
- Game One: 7-6 Queens win
- Game Two: 11-7 Queens win
- Game Three: 10-5 Firebells win
- Game Four: 17(!)-4 Firebells win
That sequence of events brings us to one final showdown tonight!
The series so far has showcased incredible moments of triumph from both teams. They’ve battled back and forth long enough to force one final game that will decide the championship.
Tonight the inaugural WPBL champions will be crowned.
