Serge Gnabry suffered a massive injury blow back in Aprila at the tail end of Bayern Munich’s season that ultimately led to him missing out on the World Cup with Germany. He also missed Bayern’s last six Bundesliga matches of the season, the Champions League semifinals against Paris Saint-Germain, and both the DFB-Pokal semifinal (Bayer Leverkusen) and final win (VfB Stuttgart).
Gnabry was in a decent run of form prior to his adductor injury. He had provided a key assist in the first leg Champions
League quarterfinals win over Real Madrid, bagged a brace in the 4-0 win over Union Berlin at the end of March, and had a goal and assist in Germany’s 4-3 friendly win over Switzerland during the March international break. For both Vincent Kompany and Julian Nagelsmann, losing Gnabry and such a key period was a massive blow, which was made even worse when Lennart Karl suffered an injury that also kept him out of the World Cup with the national team.
Since he’s not been with Germany during the World Cup preparations and the tournament itself, Gnabry has been able to individually work on his rehab and recovery at Säbener Straße back in Munich with the club’s physios, trainers, and team doctors.
“I arrive at the training facility at 8:45 or 10:30 in the morning. Then there’s a quick check with the physio and the doctor: how did my body react to yesterday’s training? Then there’s a warm-up programme, stabilisation and mobilisation exercises – often in the gym at first, then on the pitch. Depending on the session, it takes about half an hour. Then I go back inside: lunch break and then either the second session or work with the physio, either leg strength or upper body plus endurance. After that, if needed, more physiotherapy. I’m finished around 16:30 or 17:00 and go home,” Gnabry described as a normal day at the office during his recovery in a recent interview with Bayern’s official club website.
“Very good because I can feel I’m making progress with every session. That’s fun. That’s why I’m really looking forward to being back on the pitch, and I’m working very hard to be able to play again as soon as possible,” Bayern’s number 7 continued when he was asked how he’s been feeling overall.
With most of Bayern’s attacking core getting extended time off due to their involvement in the latter stages of the World Cup (Michael Olise, Harry Kane, Luis Diaz), Gnabry will be one player Kompany can look to as fa as being a leader during the preseason training preparations as the prep for the 2026/27 campaign. They’ll also be welcoming Ismael Saibari from PSV Eindhoven this summer, but he’ll also be recovering from an injury he sustained playing for Morocco at the World Cup and Gnabry has already played the part of host of welcoming new signing Nathaniel Brown to Säbener Straße.
As a result, if he’s fully hit and healthy, Gnabry might be required to start matches for Bayern come the beginning of the season with the amount of extended time off some of the internationals will get. For him, that’s something he’s longing for, and even more so, being able to celebrate goals with fans on the pitch again. “I can hardly wait to finally play again, score a goal and celebrate it with the fans – that’s always the absolute highlight for a striker,” he stressed.
