Note from Matt Germack: Apologies for the wonkiness of our publishing schedule these past 2 weeks. All three of us have been in London for a UMD journalism college reporting project; that ended today. Ryan and Nolan are back, but I’ll be here for another 2 weeks, so may still be some disruption through then. But we’re doing our best to keep everything running smoothly. As always, feel free to email me(mgermack@gmail.com) with questions/comments/concerns.
Two Maryland women’s lacrosse legends, Christie
Jenkins and Kristin Sommar, were inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame Saturday in Baltimore. Both were members of the Terps’ dynasty that stretched from the late 1990s into the early 2000s — the program won seven straight NCAA titles.
Jenkins was a three-time All-American and two-time captain during her four years stint with the Terps — she won a national championship in each of those seasons. Jenkins was also named ACC Player of the Year in 1999 and was named to the conference’s 50th-anniversary team in 2002.
Sommar was a steady presence in the midfield, excelling on both ends of the field. Across her collegiate career, she tallied 104 goals and 72 assists, but saved some of her best work for the defensive side of the ball.
Both Jenkins and Sommar captured gold at the 2001 Women’s World Cup for the U.S.
