Newcastle United are continuing their search for a new goalkeeper, with fresh links pointing to a goalie from the German Bundesliga.
According to Sky’s Florian Plettenberg, the Magpies are actively working on a deal for Werder Bremen’s Mio Backhaus and might be close to reaching a deal for their potential new No. 1 keeper.
“A departure of Mio Backhaus is becoming more and more likely as several clubs are becoming more active—including Freiburg and Newcastle,” Plettenberg reports.
The 22-year-old has
attracted growing interest after establishing himself as a starter in Germany, with multiple clubs entering a race that might end with Werder Bremen landing a sizable fee in exchange for their keeper.
“Werder Bremen would prefer to keep him, but need income and are demanding up to €20m,” Plattenberg reported.
With Aaron Ramsdale’s loan set to end and him bound to return to Bournemouth, and aging Nick Pope now 34, the goalkeeper position has become a key need to address this summer.
According to Plattenberg, clubs are already working on a transfer for the goalie, although the saga has no conclusion yet.
“Concrete talks are currently ongoing,” Plattenberg wrote. “No agreements yet.”
