Wake Forest has their 2nd loss of the offseason with back up point guard Sebastian Akins heading into the transfer portal.
Akins, a sophomore who transferred to Wake Forest from Denver, spent just 1 season with the Deacs where he averaged 5.3 points and 1.9 assists
per game. He shot a career low 40% from the floor and 18% from beyond the arc this season and made just 3 total 3-pointers in conference play. While he wasn’t the most efficient scorer, Akins has to tools to be a solid point guard at a high major, as evident by his 12 point, 4 assists, 5 steal game against Louisville in February. Another season of development to refine his skills and decision making should set him for a very productive senior year.
With Nate Calmese graduating, this loss leaves Wake Forest without a true point guard on the roster for next season. Isaac Carr handled the point at times this season with Calmese injured, and even though he finished the season with 31 assists to just 16 turnovers, I just don’t know if he is a long term answer as a starting point guard in the ACC. That means the Deacs will once again have to go into the portal to find an affordable starter at arguably the most important position on the court—that is no small task.
Go Deacs.
