Well, this is it. The St. Louis Cardinals season will wrap up the season this weekend in Milwaukee against the Brewers. Two teams reaching completely opposite destinations, but perhaps the young blood of the St. Louis Cardinals can finish strong to show the division leaders that we’re coming for their crown someday.
Here are the scheduled pitching matchups for the Cardinals vs Brewers this weekend:
Friday night: Michael McGreevy (RHP 7-9, 3.84 ERA, 113 SO) vs Robert Gasser (LHP 5-5, 4.01 ERA, 94 SO)
Saturday night: Quinn Mathews (LHP 2-3, 3.65 ERA, 39 SO) vs Dustin May (RHP 7-9, 4.67 ERA, 139 SO)
Sunday: Andre Pallante (RHP 12-8, 3.61 ERA, 106 SO) vs Jacob Misiorowski (RHP 15-5, 1.86 ERA, 247 SO)
Robert Gasser is 1-0 in his last 3 starts and his most recent was an impressive 7 inning win against the Baltimore Orioles on September 19 when he only allowed 3 hits and no earned runs.
Dustin May is also 1-0 in his last 3 starts, but he only threw 2 innings on September 22 against the Phillies where he gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs. His last victory was on 9/11 when he threw 7 innings against the Reds allowing just 2 hits and no earned runs.
Jacob Misiorowski is also 1-0 in his last 3 outings. Jacob’s most recent start was on September 20 as he threw 3 innings against the Orioles striking out 4 and allowing no runs.
The Brewers are 7-3 in their last 10 games and on their way to entering the playoffs as the #1 seed in the National League. The Cardinals are 4-6 in their last 10 games and they’ll be first on the golf course in October. For the Cardinals, one of the biggest potential highlights of the weekend against the Brewers could be Alec Burleson finishing the season as the MLB RBI king. Entering Friday’s game, he stands at 113 RBI’s with the next competitors being Pete Alonzo and Sal Stewart at 110. Jordan Walker has been stuck at 28 home runs for the past few weeks. Could his desire to swing at sweepers out of the zone depart and he connects for a couple of long balls this weekend? I’d love to see Walker reach 30 homers, but I’m not holding my breath for it to happen based on swing decisions he’s made for the past couple of weeks.
Thanks to Thursday’s loss at Pittsburgh, the Cardinals are guaranteed to have another losing season which I’ve already made my peace with. The season was about rebuilding and I’m satisfied with the overall trajectory of the Cardinals now especially considering the talent the team now has in Springfield and Memphis.
I’m already sensing the withdrawal that will kick in once the Cardinals wrap up the season Sunday in Milwaukee. Sure, I’ll be following the playoffs like most of the VEB community, but the wait for Spring Training 2027 will seem like forever especially with the uncertainty of the upcoming collective bargaining dumpster fire that is almost sure to happen. Let’s hope the Cardinals can give us 3 positive games in Milwaukee to wrap up the 2026 season and then let’s hope we see them in Spring Training at the regularly scheduled time next year.
