The sound you heard was the last bit of college basketball collapsing. With the news of Seth Trimble, potentially the last four-year player at UNC, announcing his transfer to Louisville on Wednesday, what little good remained in the sport was dashed. Not only does this mean that RJ Davis is now the last player to play his entire career at UNC (who knows how long that will stand), but by choosing Louisville, Trimble also invokes a different question, is this the most heartbreaking transfer ever from
UNC, and if it isn’t where does it rank amongst the rest?
Since the portal is still fairly new, the options for this category are still quite limited. However, I do think Trimble makes a strong case for the top spot. As previously mentioned, he played for the school for all four eligible years (this fifth year eligibility should’ve included his class to begin with and if it had, I do believe he makes it five for five). No other Tar Heel to stay four years went on to play elsewhere. Trimble was a Tar Heel through and through and stayed even when he could’ve run like many other players did. We watched him develop before our eyes and cry on Senior Night and now whenever his name appears in a program for a pro team it will say Louisville underneath it.
Other players like Eliott Cadeau and Caleb Love might’ve has success elsewhere, but most would agree it was time for them to move on when they did and in fact they probably both benefited from the move. Even a player like Ven-Allen Lubin doesn’t hurt as much despite transferring to a more hated rival because he was only at North Carolina for one season. Trimble should always be a Tar Heel and now it will come with an asterisk. Here’s hoping the Colorado Judge’s ruling gets overturned and Trimble has to return to pursuing a pro career and will forever be just a Tar Heel.
