Former Ole Miss golfer Jackson Suber had a solid second round at the Open Championship but slid back one spot from first to tied for second with two other golfers halfway through the tournament.
The second round was not without a heaping helping of drama as Bryson DeChambeau seemed to finish his round in second place at (-7). Then rules officials assessed a two stroke penalty against the previous major championship winner for improving his lie on the fifth hole slipping DeChambeau back to (-5) to be tied
for fifth.
All of that craziness aside, Suber has been playing his ass off of late and finding himself in the mix on Saturdays and Sundays for possible titles. He has yet to pull one off, and this is absolutely the biggest stage he has performed on yet. It is the oldest major championship where the sport was dadgum invented, so Suber’s playing days at Ole Miss are a far cry from where he finds himself now.
Our former golfing son posted the best round on Thursday to sit atop the leaderboard, and he could have wilted today as other golfers went as low as 62 (-8). He didn’t play his absolute finest, but he did post a 69 (-1) to get to (-6) for the tournament and tied with Cameron Young and Ryan Gerard.
Suber and the field will be chasing Lucas Herbert who is ahead of everyone by at least two strokes with two rounds to play at Royal Birkdale. Herbert has one win on the PGA Tour but no major championship on his resume. There are a lot of big names within shouting distance of first with the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood, Sam Burns, Jon Rahm all also in the top 10.
Coverage begins in the wee morning hours at 4 a.m. CT on the USA Network with coverage shifting to NBC at 6 a.m. CT until 2 p.m. CT. We do not have tee times and groupings set yet, but I think its fair to say you wouldn’t see Suber until maybe 8:30 or 9 a.m. if you want to wait to tune in.
