It’s already been a busy trading season in the NFL, with interior defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, guard Quenton Nelson, defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., offensive lineman Cam Jurgens and others finding new homes via trades.
President of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane is always willing to wheel and deal, having made moves leading up to the trade deadline in three of the last four regular seasons.

With the Bills (5-1) sitting in first place in the AFC East and tied for first place in the AFC, the pressure is on Beane and the Bills to make a move and help get this team to the Super Bowl. Today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off with thoughts on what the Bills can do to shore up their roster via a trade, and why it will be difficult for Beane to create enough cap space to make a major splash at the deadline.
Check out the news items below and then let us know your thoughts on who Brandon Beane should acquire before the trade deadline in the comments section.
Bills don’t have a lot of cap space to make a deal
The NFL’s trade deadline is at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Josh Allen and Buffalo’s offense is once again leading the league in scoring, while the Bills defense is struggling to stop the pass and get off the field on third down while allowing too many scores in the fourth quarter. Buffalo is surrendering 28.5 points per game (30th), and 386.8 yards per game (31st).
Safe to say, Beane and head coach Joe Brady spent the bye week exploring potential trade options to bring in for the stretch run.
The problem is, as of now, the Bills only have $4.5 million in available cap space, according to Spotrac, a figure that ranks 27th in the NFL. That just isn’t enough cap space to bring in anyone with a base salary, which counts on this year’s cap. Sure, the Bills have a few moves they could make to create some cap space, but Beane is limited in how aggressive he can be at the trade deadline.
We discuss possible additions Beane could bring in to improve Buffalo’s defense, including talented Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun (pictured below), and explain why safety, edge rusher, inside linebacker, and interior defensive line are the biggest priorities to address via a trade.
We also break down the assets available to Beane to pull off a deal; then shift gears and analyze how the Bills have won their last 11 games coming off the bye week; and explore whether Josh Allen has played better for Buffalo in games immediately following the bye.
